Traditions & festivals

A B2 tour through four beloved Luxembourgish festivals. Read each paragraph, picture the scene, then reveal the translation.

Text

Trotz senger klenger Gréisst huet Lëtzebuerg vill al Traditiounen, déi bis haut lieweg bliwwe sinn. E puer vun hinne ginn op d'Mëttelalter zréck, anerer op reliéis Feierdeeg. Fir vill Lëtzebuerger sinn dës Fester e wichtege Bestanddeel vun der Identitéit, well se d'Leit zesummebréngen an d'Joreszäite rhythméieren.

Translation

Despite its small size, Luxembourg has many old traditions that have stayed alive to this day. Some of them go back to the Middle Ages, others to religious feast days. For many Luxembourgers these festivals are an important part of their identity, because they bring people together and give the seasons a rhythm.

Am Wanter, um éischte Sonndeg an der Faaschtenzäit, gëtt am ganze Land d'Buergbrennen gefeiert. An de Dierfer bauen d'Leit eng grouss Buerg aus Holz a Stréi, déi dann owes ugezonnt gëtt. D'Flamen, déi héich an den Himmel klammen, sollen de Wanter vertreiwen an de Fréijoer wëllkomm heeschen. Ronderëm d'Feier drénkt een e Glühwäin an ësst eng Grillwurscht.

Translation

In winter, on the first Sunday of Lent, the Buergbrennen is celebrated all over the country. In the villages people build a large 'castle' out of wood and straw, which is then set alight in the evening. The flames, which climb high into the sky, are meant to drive away winter and welcome spring. Around the fire people drink mulled wine and eat a grilled sausage.

Um Ouschterméindeg fënnt zu Lëtzebuerg-Stad an zu Nospelt d'Éimaischen statt, e Maart mat enger laanger Traditioun. Do kafe grouss a kleng d'Péckvillercher, dat si kleng Villercher aus Toun, mat deenen een päifen kann. Nospelt war fréier bekannt fir seng Handwierker, déi mat Toun geschafft hunn, an dofir huet dëse Brauch grad do seng Wuerzelen. Fir vill Kanner ass et den Héichpunkt, sech en neit Péckvillchen erauszesichen.

On Easter Monday the Éimaischen takes place in Luxembourg City and in Nospelt, a market with a long tradition. There young and old buy the Péckvillercher, which are little clay birds you can whistle with. Nospelt used to be known for its craftsmen who worked with clay, and that is why this custom has its roots precisely there. For many children the highlight is picking out a new whistling bird.

Den Nationalfeierdag gëtt all Joer den 23. Juni gefeiert, obwuel de Grand-Duc net wierklech un dësem Dag Gebuertsdag huet. Schonn den Owend virdrun ass am ganze Land eppes lass: et gëtt e grousst Freedefeier, an d'Leit ginn zesummen an d'Stad, fir ze feieren. Den Dag selwer ginn et en Te Deum an der Kathedral an eng Militärparad. Iwwerall gesäit een d'Nationalfändel an d'Faarwe rout, wäiss a blo.

Translation

National Day is celebrated every year on 23 June, although the Grand Duke does not really have his birthday on that day. Already the evening before, something is going on all over the country: there are big fireworks, and people go into town together to celebrate. On the day itself there is a Te Deum in the cathedral and a military parade. Everywhere you see the national flag and the colours red, white and blue.

Déi wuel bekanntst Fest ass awer d'Schueberfouer, eng grouss Kiermes, déi ëmmer Enn August ufänkt an dräi Wochen dauert. Si gouf schonn am 14. Joerhonnert vum Jang de Blannen gegrënnt an ass haut d'gréisst Volleksfest vum Land. Nieft de villen Attraktiounen a Karussellen däerf een op kee Fall d'Gromperekichelcher an de gebakene Fësch verpassen. All Joer zéit d'Fouer honnertdausende Besucher un.

Translation

The best-known festival, though, is probably the Schueberfouer, a big funfair that always begins at the end of August and lasts three weeks. It was founded as far back as the 14th century by John the Blind and is today the largest popular festival in the country. Besides the many attractions and merry-go-rounds, you must on no account miss the potato fritters and the fried fish. Every year the fair attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors.
