Mobilitéit an Ëmwelt
B2Mobility & the environment
A B2 text on how Luxembourg moves: free public transport, the returning tram, heavy car dependence and the country's climate goals.
Text
Lëtzebuerg ass e klengt Land, mä wann et ëm d'Mobilitéit geet, huet et grouss Erausfuerderungen. Op de Stroossen sinn extrem vill Autoen ënnerwee: kaum e Land an Europa huet esou vill Autoe pro Awunner. Vill Leit sinn op hiren Auto ugewisen, well se um Land wunnen, wou de Bus net dacks fiert. D'Resultat sinn all Moien a all Owend laang Stauen op den Autobunne ronderëm d'Stad.

Luxembourg is a small country, but when it comes to mobility it has big challenges. There are extremely many cars on the roads: hardly any country in Europe has so many cars per inhabitant. Many people depend on their car because they live in the countryside, where the bus does not run often. The result is long traffic jams on the motorways around the city every morning and every evening.
Fir dat z'änneren, huet d'Regierung 2020 eng grouss Decisioun geholl: zënterhier ass den ëffentlechen Transport am ganze Land gratis. Lëtzebuerg war domat dat éischt Land op der Welt, wou Bus, Tram an Zuch fir jiddereen näischt méi kaschten. Wien awer an der éischter Klass mam Zuch fuere wëll, muss nach ëmmer bezuelen.

To change this, the government made a big decision in 2020: since then, public transport in the whole country has been free. Luxembourg thereby became the first country in the world where bus, tram and train cost nothing for anyone anymore. Anyone who wants to travel first class by train, however, still has to pay.
An der Haaptstad spillt den neien Tram eng wichteg Roll. No méi wéi fofzeg Joer ass en 2017 zréck op d'Stroosse komm, an d'Streck gëtt zënterhier ëmmer méi laang. Haut fiert den Tram vum Fluchhafe bis an d'Zentrum, a soll an Zukunft nach weider ausgebaut ginn. Vill Awunner benotzen en, well en zouverlässeg, roueg a séier ass.

In the capital, the new tram plays an important role. After more than fifty years it returned to the streets in 2017, and since then the line keeps getting longer. Today the tram runs from the airport to the centre, and it is to be extended further in the future. Many residents use it because it is reliable, quiet and fast.
Trotzdem bleift den Auto fir vill Leit den éischte Choix. Méi wéi zweehonnertdausend Grenzgänger kommen all Dag aus de Nopeschlänner op d'Aarbecht, a vill vun hinne fuere mam Auto, well d'Verbindunge mat Bus an Zuch net iwwerall gutt sinn. Dofir sinn d'Autobunnen dacks verstopft, an d'Ofgase vun den Autoe belaaschten d'Ëmwelt.

Nevertheless, the car remains the first choice for many people. More than two hundred thousand cross-border commuters come to work every day from the neighbouring countries, and many of them drive by car because the bus and train connections are not good everywhere. That is why the motorways are often congested, and the exhaust fumes from the cars burden the environment.
D'Land huet sech ambitiéis Klimaziler gesat an et wëll bis 2050 klimaneutral ginn. Fir dat z'erreechen, gëtt de Vëlosverkéier gefërdert, ginn nei Luedstatioune fir Elektroautoe gebaut an et gëtt un engem bessere Reseau vun Zich a Busse geschafft. Ob dat duergeet, fir d'Zil ze erreechen, gëtt vun de Fachleit awer diskutéiert.
▸Translation
The country has set itself ambitious climate targets and wants to become climate-neutral by 2050. To achieve this, cycling is being promoted, new charging stations for electric cars are being built, and work is being done on a better network of trains and buses. Whether that is enough to reach the goal, however, is debated among the experts.
